Housing plans sent to Inspector

by alanconnett on 21 June, 2013

Plans for at least 12,400 houses to be built in Teignbridge have now been sent to the Government’s independent inspector by Teignbridge Council.

The Conservative run council has earmarked green fields around the Devon Hotel for ‘at least’ 2,000 new houses, eating into the green belt between Exminster and Exeter. In addition, they plan ‘at least’ 900 new houses in Dawlish.

Newton Abbot will have over 4,000 new houses and more are also planned for Kingsteignton, Kingskerswell, Chudleigh, Teignmouth and Bovey Tracey, for example.

But the Conservatives who pushed this through on the casting vote of the previous council chairman, are split about it. One Newton Abbot Conservative councillor has resigned from the Party group on Teignbridge and gone Independent.

Plan Teignbridge, as they like to call it, is a bit of a win-win for developers…. the council wants ‘at least’ 12,400 houses in total but when it comes to affordable housing for local families and single people who want a home of their home, the deal is very different.

At best, just 3 in 10 of the new houses will be ‘affordable’ for local people as developers are being told they will need to provide ‘up to’ 30% — this means communities could get more houses than they think but fewer affordable houses for local people than they want!

Doubts have also been raised about how all the essential infrastructure like roads will be paid for…. much may be promised by Teignbridge Conservatives who have pushed this plan through, but what will actually be delivered to our local towns and villages?
